RWRinston Churchill during World war 1 was the First Lord of the Admiralty. His position had several duties, but the most notable was not declassified until the 80's. He was in charge of a group of codebreakers in a basement in London. It's codename was Room 40, unknown to the Germans the allies had found several copies of their encryption key, Room 40's job was to decrypt and translate German messages. Every message the germans sent was intercepted and filed. The British however couldn't use all of this information or the Germans inevitable would understand that their code had been compromised.
Churchill was responsible for deciding which of the messages could be acted upon. It is known now that the sinking of the Lusitania could have been prevented with this knowledge.
Churchill also planned a massive invasion of Gaelipoili and a rearming of the Russian army in one stroke. However the invasion failed horrible.
